Risks of Alcohol Based Sanitisers

For all the good that hand sanitisers can do, some medical professionals have expressed concerns about some of their ingredients, as well as how these products are used. It is important to understand the dangers that they are trying to bring to light.

Alcohol based hand sanitiser poses a potential risk for alcohol poisoning, particularly for young children. According to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a 60ml bottle of hand sanitiser contains 62% ethyl alcohol. At that concentration, even a small dose can be dangerous if ingested, leading to dizziness, slurred speech, headaches and even brain damage or death in extreme cases.

Lots of restaurants are using it, how long will it last once mixed in the sink to sanitise cutlery/glasses etc. and does it have to be rinsed off?

If diluted as directed, the solution will remain active until soiled - meaning 1 tablet to 5.6 liters of water @ 200ppm will remain effective for a full day, depending on the amount of soiled items and use added to sink. Soiled item? If a dirty glass is added to 3rd sink, (wash, rinse & sanitise in 3rd sink) it will still be effective however chemical breakdown takes place and lowers the ppm concentration through out the day. We do recommend mixing a fresh solution daily. No it does not need to be rinsed.

Does it leave residue on the surface like other products?

One of the big dangers of chemical products is that they leave residue behind - Steramine leaves NO HARMFUL RESIDUE BEHIND.

Does it stain?

No, Steramine can be sprayed on surfaces and left to air dry.
